Baretti: A dictionary of the English and Italian languages
X is not used in the Italian language. The x found in Latin words is translated by a double s, as Alessandro for Alexander, and sometimes with a single one, as esemplo, for exemplum;some old authors use the x, but merely for the purpose of avoiding an equivoque, as in the word Xanto, a Greek river, which, if it were written with an s, would equivocate with Santo, a saint. In such a case others use a z, and write Zanto. X denotes the number ten.
