Theodosius, A worthie emperour of Rome, who muche fauoured and furthered Christian religion, and was besides indued with many excellent vertues. In fauour of body comly, of minde gentle, milde, and mercifuil: so hunble and curteous of behauiour, as be might seeme onely in princely apparell to differ from other: honourably bountifull to all, buterceedingly liberall to good men. Simple natures he loned well: learned and honest wittes hee had in passing greate admiration. His olde friends at whose handes he had found pleasure, he rewarded erceedingly with honourable promotions, money, and other benefites. By expresse lawe hee decreede that dauncing and wanton daliaunce shoulde not bee vsed in banquets. In learning (if wee regarde those that be excellent) but meanely instructed, but very wittie, and diligent also to haue the knowledge of Histories, wherein he alway detested the acres of them that were cruel, prowde, and cnimies to libertie, as Marius, Silla, and Cinna. His feasting was princely and pleasant, but without excesse or great sumptuousnesse: his feeding temperate, respecting more his health, than sensuall delight. Towarde his children, a milde and gentle father: toward his wife a louing and quiet husband. He died at Millaine, being 50. yeares of age, aboute the yeare of Christe 397.
