Baretti: A dictionary of the English and Italian languages
T, s. m.
1. the eighteenth letter of the Italian alphabet. T is a consonant differing in sound from the d only in its having a harsh articulation. These two letters in Italian are often used indiscriminately, as in etate, etade. Tadmits after it 1, r, which occasion it to have a fainter sound, as in atleta, trave, &c. It admits before it in the middle of a word 1, n, r, s,as in alto, punta, orto, asta. In the beginning of a word it may be preceded by s, as in storia,&c. In common with the other consonants it is to be found double in the middle of words, as in atto, petto, &c.; 2. (surg. t.) a bandage formed like a T.
