S, s. f. a consonant, and the seventeenth letter of the Italian alphabet. S, in the beginning of compound words, is often the contraction of dis,corresponding to the English privative dis- or mis-: as, composto, composed; scomposto, discomposed. S is sometimes used as an intensitive: as, battere, to beat; sbattere, to beat soundly. And sometimes it is wholly ineffective: as, campare, to save; scampare, to save. The Italian s has two sounds, the one hard, as the s in the English word say; the other soft, as the s in the English word rose.S', contr. of se or si.
