Lucullus, A famous and noble man of Rome, in riches, learning and martiall prowesse verie excellente. Being Ouesto he did set foorth exceeding somptuous games & sightes vnto the people. In his Prætourship, he gouerned Affrike with great tustice. When he was sent as captaine againste Mithridates into Asia, hee deliuered his companion in office Cotta, that was besieged in Chalcedon: he rescued the citie Cizicon, being in much daunger: hee ouerthrewe Mithridates in a great battaile, and droue him out of his kingdome: he discumfited him the seconde time, when he was aided of the mightie prince king Tigranes of Armenia, and woulde cleane haue finished that warre, had not the fame of his couetousnesse caused him to be sente for home by the Senate. After his returne out of Asia, he gaue himself altogither to sumptuous and sensuall life. For in his voyage against Mithridates, hee gat so greate riches and treasure, that he was not able to waste the same in most sumptuous buildings of gorgeous houses, libraries, galleries, & walks, in making of fishe pondes, gardeyns, and other deuises of pleasure, in so straunge fashion and maner, as neuer before his time was seene: wheras daylie also he vsed such outragious fare, in feasting and banketring, that his deliciousnesse and sensualitie is growne to a prouerbe. In the ende, he being altered in his wittes, was committed to the tuition of his brother Ma. Lucullus.
