Hippolytus, The sonne of Theseus, who at the complaynte of Phædra his stepmother, was pursued with his father, and bee in a Charior sleeing, was ouerthrowne among thesharpe stones, and rent all to peeces. Afterward Aescnlapius reuiued and restored him to life. Wherfore he would be called Virbius, that is to say, twise a man, for as muche as he had twise liued.

Hippŏltus, i, m., = *(ippo/lutos, son of Theseus and Hippolyte; his step-mother Phœdra fell in love with him, but, on her advances being repelled, she accused him to her husband of attempts upon her chastity; the king in his rage cursed him and devoted him to destruction; whereupon he was torn to pieces by his horses; he was, however, restored to life by Æsculapius, and taken by Diana, under the name of Virbius, to the grove near Aricia, where he afterwards received divine honors, Ov.
