Canopus, A marueylous bright starre. Also his name that was mailter of Menelaus shippes, whiche being deade in am yle, at the entrie of Nilus, caused that Ile to be called by his name, and was there bonored for a God. Of whom this pretie historie is remembred of Suidas. The people of siuerse countreys contending for the preeminence of theyr Goddesse, agreed, that those ydols, which were vanquished by any notable erperience, shoulde giue place to the vanquisher. A priest of Canopus, a wittie fellowe, got a water pot full of small holes, and stopping the holes with ware, filled it full of water, painted it, made it in forme of an ydoll, and did craftily set it on the old image, knowing that the Chaldeies honoring the fyre for God, did carie it about into all countreys, and consumed therewith all other ydols, made of mettal and other matter. But when they came to Canopus, and did set the fire about him the ware melted quickly, and the water distilling into the sire, quenched it. Wherfore Canopus was deemed vanquisher and chiefe of the Goddes.
