Argus, The sonne of Aristo the fift king of Argines, which made the shyp, wherein Iason and other sayled to Colches. The Poets feigne, that hee had an hundred eyes, signifying thereby his wisedome and circumspection. Moreouer that Iuno appoynted him to keepe Io, whome shee had transformed into a Cowe. But Mercutius (being seut by Iupiter) with his sweet harmony brought Argus on sleepe, slue him, tooke Io from him, and brought hir into Eypt. Then Iuno tooke Argus eyes, and set them in the Pecocks tayle, wherefore the Pecocke is called Auis Iunoaia.
Argus, i, m., = *)/argos. I.The hundred-eyed keeper of Io, after she was changed into a heifer by Jupiter; slain by Mercury at the bidding of Jupiter. His hundred eyes were placed by Juno in the tail of the peacock, Ov. M. 1, 625 sq.; 15, 385; Prop. 1, 3, 20 (cf. Eustath. ad Hom. Il. 2, p. 138; Schol. ad Eurip.
