Ambrosius, sij, m. ge. The name of diuers men: of which one most excellent, was Bishop of Millain, % yeere of our Lord 373. a Romaine borne of a noble and auncient house, and had beene Consull. As this man (being sent by Valentinianus the Emperour to Myllaine, to pacifte a sedition) persuaded the people to concorde: sodeinly the voyce of an infant was hearde of all men, which cryed: Ambrosius is worthie to be bishop: which voice so feruÊtly stirred the people, that they all condiscended to make him their Bishoppe, notwithstanding he was not yet baptized, but newly instructed in the faith. And though he instantly refused, they compelled him to take it vpon him. And forthwith all the people of Lumbardie agreed in one opinion of the faith. He was of such holynes, such gentlenes, such excellent wisedom and learning, that not onely in his life, but also after hys death, he was throughout the worlde had in honour and reuerence. A rare forme of election, and as rate a thing it is to finde a byshop or priest of Ambrosius qualities, although he were halfe a Painim, and a temporal man when he was chosen bishop: wherat they may be ashamed, that be christened in their infancie, and xx. yeares or more priests, ere they be Bishops, and yet some not worthie to occupie that reuerende offyce.
