Aegeus, Neptunes sonne, was king of Athens, and had wiues, Aethra, and Medea. Vpon Aethra, he begot Theseus, on Medea Medus, who after gane name to Media. In this mans reigne king Minos of Crete, in reuengement of his sonne Androgeus his death, had made mosre cruess warre on the Atheniens, and had set vpon them shi penaltie, that yearely they should send into Crete, seuen noble mens children to be deuoured of the monster Minotaurus. This penaltie had bene erecuted three yeares, and the fourth by lotte it fell among other to Theseus king Aegeus his eldest sonne: who being of noble heart and courage, did put them in great hope to kill the monster, and with much honour to scape the daunger. At his departure therefore he had in charge of his father, if the shippe he went in, returned prosperously with good successe, that he shonld set vp a white sayle in token of victorie, and pull downe the black that they went fortb with as moutners. But when Theseus by the counsell of Ariadne king Minos his daughter, had ouercome the monster, & with a clewe of threede escapcd the Labyrinth, sayling homeward again with great ioy towardhis conntrie, he forgot his fathers commandement touching the white saile. Wherfore the old Prince passingly desirous of his sonnes safe returne, and very carcfull of his danger, was dayly on the coppe of an high rocke, to see whether hee coulde espie the ship returning with the token of his sonnes victorie. But at the length seeing the ship flitting homeward as it went forth with a black sayle, thinking his sonne and the residue to haue bene siaine, for sorowe did cast himselfe into the sea, that afterwarde of his name was called AegeÛ. After his death, to % comfort of his sonne Thesens, be was by the Atheniens cõsecrated to be a God of the sea.
