Democles, A notable slatterer, in the time of Dionysius the iyranne. This flatterer when he would oftentimes extoll beyond measure the kings felcitie, Dyonise willing to giue him a triall and proofe of it, caused him to be arrayed in princely robes, and so did set him at a table to be serned like a king. But inst ouer his head in the place where he should sirte, he caused a sworde to be hanged by a small threede: which when Democles perceyued, hee coulde not for feace either taste of his pleasaunt meates, or take any comfort in his royall sernice. Whereby Dionysius did hin to witte, that the lyfe of a tyrant in middes of all princely poinpe and royaltie, is continually in feare and daunger of death and extremitie.
