H, s. f. h. It is a consonant, and the eighth letter of the Italian alphabet; its use is now restricted,1st. To prolonging the sounds of the vowels a, e, o, u, in the interjections ah, ahi, deh, eh, oh, uh, hi, hui.2ndly. To distinguishing the four voices of the verb avere, ho, hai, ha, hanno, from o, ai, a, anno.3rdly. To indicating the hard sound of the consonants c, g, before the vowels e, i; as in the words cheto, chino, gherone. It is found only in the four syllables che, chi, ghe, ghi.
